ABOUT NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans Parking Guide

About New Orleans New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. It is the festival capital of the world.

The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in America. It is one of the world's most fascinating cities. The climate of New Orleans is humid subtropical, with short, generally mild winters and hot, humid summers.

Parking in New Orleans The Department of Public Works Parking Division manages the on-street (curb space) parking in New Orleans. The safety measures enforced by this department include ticketing and towing violating vehicles, immobilizing vehicles, and towing abandoned vehicles. This division is also responsible for establishing and managing residential parking zones throughout the City.

Metered Parking The city has modernized many of its parking meters, and some now accept credit cards and dollar bills which provides a printed receipt which you can place on your car dashboard while parked.

Parking is prohibited at meters in designated rush hour zones from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Please read the meters before you park! Also know that broken meters are not free passes. They are technically off-limits and could land you a ticket! While parking in the city, always remember the rule: Read parking signs very carefully. The rules applicable in one area might not be the same in any other area.

Holidays Parking is free on "meter" holidays observed by the City of New Orleans:

  • New Year's Day
  • Independence Day
  • Martin L. King, Jr. Day
  • Labor Day
  • Mardi Gras Day (the day before Ash Wednesday)
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Christmas Day

Parking in Garages/lots There are many parking garages in and around downtown. If you have a planned visit, it is always advisable to compare the parking facilities online and reserve your space in advance so you can make your experience comfortable.

After 9:00 a.m., prices rise considerably: rates can run as much as $10 an hour in some areas or more. Some lots charge a "Special Event" rate for such special events and festivals. You need to check the hourly or fixed rate before deciding where to park. It is the best option to compare all nearby garages to your destination online and decide which the best suited option is!
